Snobs

I went to say goodbye to Snobs before it moved to its new home. For a lot of people in Birmingham, this really is the end of an era. Snobs has been a constant in the city for over 40 years, and you’d be hard pushed to find someone who hasn’t stepped foot on that sticky dance floor at least once.

It was the first nightclub I ever went to. Walking down those stairs and past the familiar faces on the wall brought back a rush of memories — cheap drinks, bad decisions, and even worse kebabs from the place next door.

I had the privilege of being let into the club on a Tuesday morning to document the venue while it was empty. It was strange being in there, just me and the cleaners, getting to mooch around, go behind the decks and nose through the piles of CDs (bangers all the way down).

I wanted to make these images as a record of a little piece of Birmingham history — to try and capture something of what this place meant to so many people. We’ve all been there, we all have memories of Snobs… even if some of those memories we’re not very proud of.

These photos were even featured on BBC News: BBC article.

So raise your £1 shot of apple Sourz to Snobs and let’s hope the move goes well.

I offer prints of these images in A4, A3 and A2 sizes. Please get in touch if you’d like one.
